A graduate of the Class of 1972, Mike Manthey embodied the values of Cardinal Stritch as a student and graduate.  On the football field, Mike excelled as a tight end and defensive end, earning All-City and All-District honors, ultimately earning a full scholarship to play at the University of Toledo.  Mike’s family says his favorite Stritch memory is “passing and surviving Sister Florian’s chemistry class!”

In 1991, Mike suffered a work related accident that left him wheelchair bound.  He passed away on March 2, 2017.  About Mike’s accident, his siblings say, “His attitude was very positive, and he never dwelled on his misfortune.”  Mike volunteered extensive time as a mentor to new quadriplegics and paraplegics at the Community Medical Center in Missoula, MT.

In one of many nominations, Michael Mochon ’72 said, “His word was strong as oak, and he befriended everyone he met.  There is nothing he wouldn’t do to help his friends and family.”

Mike’s family knows that this is an honor that would make him very proud, saying he “thoroughly enjoyed his days at Cardinal Stritch and now being a part of its history.”
