Scholarship Granting Organization (SGO) Donations

What if you could donate to student scholarships at Cardinal Stritch without it costing you

any additional money! Yes, we said it, and it isn't "too good to be true."

SGO

Beginning January 2024, under the Ohio Tax Credit Program, donations up to $750 (individual) or $1500 (married filed jointly) to an Ohio Scholarship Granting Organization (SGO) may qualify for a TAX CREDIT on the donor’s Ohio tax return. Any donation above your Ohio tax liability may be taken as a deduction on your federal tax return. Remember, a credit is a dollar-for-dollar amount that reduces taxes owed to the State of Ohio, compared to a tax deduction which reduces a taxpayer’s overall taxable income.

It’s easy!

  1. Visit our partner, Ohio’s Every Child Every Family’s website at  https://everychildeveryfamily.org/donate/
  2. Select Cardinal Stritch Catholic High School & Academy (Oregon)
  3. Make your donation

That’s it!

Every Child Every Family will send you, the donor, a tax receipt while also alerting Cardinal Stritch of the generous gift. Cardinal Stritch will then receive the funds from Every Child Every Family to award student scholarships. (Donors may not select a specific student for the funds.) Specific tax questions should be directed to your personal tax advisor.

Frequently Asked Questions About SGO Donations

What is a Scholarship Granting Organization (SGO)?

A Scholarship Granting Organization (SGO) is a 501(c)(3) organization that receives donations and then grants scholarships to eligible students in the State of Ohio. Donors that contribute to a certified Ohio SGO can receive a tax credit through their Ohio Income Tax. The Ohio Tax Credit Program was established in 2021 as part of Ohio House Bill 110.

Does Cardinal Stritch partner with a SGO?

Yes! The Cardinal Stritch Catholic High School & Academy SGO partnership was created in January of 2024 and is managed through the charitable organization, Every Child Every Family. This partnership allows donors to make donations for students at Cardinal Stritch, while allowing donors to be eligible for a state of Ohio income tax credit. It is a dollar-for-dollar credit, but it is limited to $750 for an individual or $1,500 if married, filing jointly.

Can I still claim a tax credit for 2023 even though we are in 2024?

Yes! To claim a 2023 Ohio Scholarship Donation Credit, you would make a donation to the Cardinal Stritch SGO partner at Every Child Every Family (https://everychildeveryfamily.org/donate/) designating Cardinal Stritch as the recipient before April 15, 2024.

How can I find my tax liability?

Your tax liability can be found on line 13 (page 2) of the Ohio IT 1040.

What if my donation goes above my Ohio Income Tax Liability or I don’t have an Ohio Income Tax Liability?

Any donation above your Ohio tax liability may be taken as a deduction on your federal tax return. For example, if your Ohio Tax liability is $500 and you donate $750, $500 will be a tax credit on your Ohio income tax and $250 will be a federal deduction.

What is the difference between a tax credit and a tax deduction?

A tax credit is a dollar-for-dollar credit against taxes owed to the State of Ohio. It is money you are already obligated to pay to the state that you can allocate to Cardinal Stritch scholarships instead. A tax deduction reduces a taxpayer’s overall taxable income. Specific tax questions should be directed to your personal tax advisor.

How can I donate?

Every Child Every Family is an organization who will manage the Cardinal Stritch Catholic High School & Academy SGO program. Interested donors visit https://everychildeveryfamily.org/donate/, select Cardinal Stritch Catholic High School & Academy (Oregon), and complete their donation. Donations up to $750 (individual) or $1500 (married filed jointly) may be eligible for the state of Ohio income tax. Specific tax questions should be directed to your personal tax advisor.

Can I donate directly to the school?

Can I pick a certain student to receive my contribution as a scholarship?

Donors may not select a specific student for the funds to go towards. In addition, and in accordance with Ohio SGO program guidelines, priority for scholarships will be given to low income students (under 300% of the poverty threshold).

Is my gift still eligible to be matched by my company/employer?

Absolutely! This is an easy and incredible way to double your gift. As always, contact your employer for information on what steps will be needed to double your donation. You will not receive tax credit for the amount of your company’s matching gift.

Who is responsible for submitting my gift to the state for tax purposes?

Each donor is responsible for maintaining personal tax receipt(s) provided by Every Child Every Family. When Cardinal Stritch receives the gift, you will also receive an acknowledgement letter from us. The letter you receive is strictly an acknowledgement and gesture of thanks, while your tax receipt will come from Every Child Every Family.
