Principal’s Message

Hello Cardinal Families! Welcome back to school year 23-24. Our enrollment is up, football is back, and we are ready for another great year of learning in a Christ-centered environment!

As we pursue our goal of becoming the premier private school in the East Toledo/Oregon area, we also continue to make positive changes to our curriculum, data-driven instruction and grading policies, and levels of instructional rigor to ensure that our students are well prepared for college and career! We will be sharing important academic information with you at our Meet and Greet, and throughout the first semester.

One major change this year, in terms of policies and procedures, is that students will not be able to carry their cell phones during the day at any time. Students may leave their phones in their lockers and check them in between classes, but the research clearly shows that cell phone use in school negatively impacts student learning. According to the Harvard Graduate School of Education author Emily Boudrea, in the article, Weighing the Costs and Benefits of Cellphones in Schools (2022).

“The existing studies provide evidence that allowing phones in the classroom negatively impacts test scores and long-term learning retention. There are some correlational studies that suggest negative relationships between off-task device use and student achievement. Further, in psychology, research on multitasking generally finds negative effects on learning and task completion and, more generally, research has shown that cell phones distract and negatively impact reaction times, performance, enjoyment of focal tasks, and cognitive capacity. “

We know that many people will question this decision, but we want our students focused on their academics and personal, face-to-face communication skills, and removing phones from their school day will help them to be better students and interpersonal communicators. The phone policy will be strictly enforced and there will be no exceptions. Please do your part as a parent by talking to your kids about following this positive learning change.

We are excited to announce several new staff members including our new Assistant Principal, Angela Glynn, coming to us from Immaculate Heart High School in Los Angeles, CA. Angela has more than 19 years of experience as an educator with expertise in Catholic Leadership, special education services, various areas of student services, and student discipline. Angela is originally from the Toledo area and an area Catholic school graduate.

Bless you all and we are excited for a new year of learning!
